IPOA receives PPE donation

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has received a shot in the arm with a donation of Personal Protection Equipment (PPEs) from the United States Government.

Receiving the donation, IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori explained that the Authority faced challenges prior to the donation. “When the first case of COVID-19 was announced in Kenya in March, 2020, just like many other institutions, IPOA was suddenly faced with new challenges. Critical being continuation of its work.”

Vice Chairperson Dr. Jonathan Lodompui also expressed gratitude to the US Embassy, Nairobi which handed over the donation on behalf of the US Government. “This donation illustrates the strategic partnership IPOA continues to enjoy with the US Government and also offers us an opportunity to continue serving the people of Kenya safely.”

US Government representative, Ms. Roselyn Linguli noted IPOA plays a critical oversight role over the work of the police hence the facilitation to enable its operations continue unabated. “We note the important work that IPOA plays in the police reforms journey and will continue to support where we can,” she said.

IPOA CEO Mr Maina Njoroge committed to ensure the donation that comprised of face masks, gloves, detergents, disinfectant, digital thermometers and sanitizers was used responsibly while observing accountability. “The US Government has walked with us since inception supporting our cause through technical training, equipment and hardware support.”

Accompanying the US representative, Dr. Daniel Kimani of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reiterated the prevention of the virus spread through proper use of masks, gloves, safe distancing and hygiene. He cautioned that “people in service such as IPOA and the NPS are at high risk and should exercise caution and the preventive protocols provided by the Kenya Government and the World Health Organisation (WHO).” He also lauded the internal measures already established by the Authority to safeguard the staff and visitors. 

Also present during the handover were Commissioners Fatuma Mohamed, Dr. Jimmy Mwithi and Dr. Owen Ogony as well as management representatives Mr. Benson Milao and Mr.Dennis Oketch.
